The Ten Commandments... of Singing in Church

The lectionary tells us that this week, the Old Testament lesson will be the Ten Commandments from the 20th chapter of Exodus. So in preparation, I present the Ten Commandments of Singing in Church (as found in a leaflet in a Serbian Orthodox church).

I. You shall sing!

II. You shall sing with all your heart, all your soul, and all your might!

III. You shall sing fearlessly, ignoring possible wondering glances of your neighbors. They would like to sing with you if they had the nerve, and thy will sing with you if you continue!

IV. You shall sing joyfully, as it is written by the prophet Isaiah, "Sing, O heaven, be joyful, O earth, and break forth into singing, O mountains!"

V.  You shall sing reverently, for music is prayer!

VI. You shall not resist new melodies, for it is written in the book of Psalms, "O sing unto the Lord a new song!"

VII. You shall not mumble the melody, but sing it out loud, even if with occasional mistakes!

VIII. You shall not hesitate to sing together with the choir. They want you to join them!

IX. You shall not forget the words in the book of Psalms, "I will sing unto the Lord as long as I live!"

X. Join the church choir if your heart calls you to sing!
